Social Security of Women through Insurance
Women, especially the rural poor, have always found themselves at a disadvantage
in accessing funds. Some of the reasons could be their lack of exposure to the
world outside their homes, a low level of literacy and unfamiliarity with bureaucratic
procedures involved in procuring funds.
They, being vulnerable always faced uncertainty like death of earning member
of the family, disability, loss of livelihood assets and sometimes-major health
problems. One way through which such groups could be protected in such situations
was to make them aware of the importance and need of insurance schemes and integrate
them into such schemes.
With the experience of previous insurance related work, ICECD joined hands with
FICCI - CARE and identified relevant insurance schemes, both for life and other
risks, for the women of Kutch. A number of projects had already been implemented
to help women by technical training, entrepreneurship training, and development
of capacities. Some of these women were already developmental partners of CARE
/ ICECD / other NGOs in the past and in on-going developmental projects.
The
project covered these partner women under a variety of insurance schemes for
life, health, personal accident besides covering their houses and house contents
against risks like earthquake/ floods /other calamities
