Marketable Skill Development For Employment

Empowering Urban Poor
The phenomenon of growing unemployment has, of late, emerge as a major problem. An accelerated expansion of employment opportunities is necessary both for poverty alleviation and effective utilization of human resources for economic and social development of the country.

During the last two decades, employment has grown at a fast rate, but due to a faster increase of labor force, the backlog of unemployment has been rising. Unemployment for the vast bulk of youth including women in slums and villages is counter-productive to their empowerment. Unemployment is a significant cause of poverty.

ICECD, with the help of British Gas and Gujarat Gas implemented a pilot project which was launched in Guptanagar in Ahmedabad and in Bharuch slums in India.

This project explored ways and means of creating new jobs and raising workers’ productivity and income.

A CASE
GUPTANAGAR – AN URBAN SLUM...Its people and their needs :
The colony, spread over 25 square kilometers mostly inhabited by Rajasthan, North Gujarat migrants with a total population of about 40,000 comprises of 6900 households. They live under tin/thatched roofs - with low skills and low wage activities, working as unskilled labor. The children get no formal education, and  are pushed into helping their parents giving rise to child labor. Poverty is the main characteristic of this slum.

Gender A Basic issue:
Womenfolk are intelligent and active but cannot earn due to lack of information, education and skills.  Social traditions stop them to venture out on one hand, while economic needs force them to go out and work on the other. But “WHERE” and “HOW” are the big issues that need to be answered.

Capacity building programme :
A training and development initiative “Empowering the Urban Poor through Market Oriented skill up gradation” was chalked out.  Applications were invited and they were taught cleaning services, incense stick making, carpentry and electrical services through training offered for 4 weeks. Today all and all of them have got job/ job work and are earning Rs.2000 and more per month.
