The phenomenon of growing unemployment due to modernisation has, of late, emerged as a major problem. An accelerated expansion of employment opportunities is necessary both for poverty alleviation and effective utilization of human resources for economic and social development of the country.
During the last two decades, employment has grown at a fast rate, but due to a faster increase of labor force, the backlog of unemployment has been rising. Unemployment for the vast bulk of youth including women in slums and villages is counter-productive to their empowerment. Unemployment is a significant cause of poverty.
ICECD, with the help of British Gas and Gujarat Gas implemented a pilot project which was launched in slums in Ahmedabad and Bharuch.
This project explored ways and means of creating new jobs and raising workers’ productivity and income. |
