More than 800 million people live in poverty in Asia alone, and with sources of development funds
decreasing, it has become imperative for the scarce funds to be deployed in the most effective way
possible. Providing credit was considered to be one of the solutions to promote small/micro
businesses by most countries. However, because of lack of entrepreneurship and linkages with
appropriate technologies, credit alone could not achieve sustainable and growth oriented micro
enterprises. Promoting small and micro businesses/enterprises thus needs an integrated approach,
requiring identification and adoption of appropriate technologies and capability building in
entrepreneurship andmanagement.
ICECD is involved in this task since 1986 and the Centre has trained and developed more than 2 lakh
entrepreneurs in specific technology oriented programmes with variety of technologies like Stapler
Pins, Miniature Motors, Miniature Bulbs, Cardboard Boxes, Hosiery Undergarments, Artificial Leather
Products, wood working, automobile, packaging etc. It has been able to evolve effective modules and
training approaches for such an integrated approach for promoting micro and small
businesses/enterprises through appropriate technologies. While economic support is available in
many countries, identification, selection and adoption of appropriate technologies for SME is one of
the missing links.
